PROFESSIONAL FIREFIGHTERS

WHO WE ARE
The members of the Tallahassee Professional Firefighters staff the Fire Rescue departments in the City of Tallahassee/Leon County and Wakulla County. We provide the manpower that brings Fire Suppression, Fire Prevention/Education, Emergency Medical Response, and Special Operations capabilities to your emergency calls across the Big Bend.
We are your neighbors, your family and your friends. Our people are involved in the Big Bend, from kids sports coaches to masonic lodges, FAMU and FSU boosters, business owners and everything in between, we are right next to you in every aspect of Leon and Wakulla County culture.

That is part of the reason we work so hard to provide the best possible services to the people of the Big Bend! We are part of you and we love our community. From our annual events like Shop with a Firefighter, our support of our local veterans and more, we work to support the area we serve.
WHAT WE DO
Our organization was established in 1974 to represent the rights of the career firefighters of the Tallahassee, negotiate on their behalf, and to work and partner with our respective departments and municipalities to provide the best possible Fire and EMS services. In 2015 we expanded to include the men and women who serve Wakulla County as well.
The Tallahassee Professional Firefighters advocates with local elected and appointed officials for the best interests of our membership as well as the best interests of the departments they serve. We also advocate through our state and international organizations, the Florida Professional Firefighters and the International Association of Fire Fighters, with state and national elected and appointed officials for funding, national standards and applicable legislation.
OUR TEAM
IAFF Local 2339 is led by our principle officers which include our President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and our District VP for Wakulla County. These positions are elected by the membership with a two year term and they serve with the guidance of our officers at the FPF and IAFF.

OUR FOUNDING
The first firefighters to unionize were the members of IAFF Local 1 in Pittsburg. They believed they needed to band together when a new city administration began removing firefighters who did not give them support. Soon after, on February 28th of 1918, the IAFF was founded in Washington D.C., and local affiliates began all over the United States.

On January 11th, 1944, six IAFF locals within the state of Florida established the Florida Professional Firefighters to work toward better legislation within the state, becoming one of the primary voices lobbying for first responders within the sunshine state.

Finally, on May 21st, 1974, the Tallahassee Firefighters began IAFF Local 2339 in response to the City's unwillingness to negotiate terms of their retirement plan. This issue was taken to the Florida Supreme Court and became case law providing that right to every first responder in the state.
